Employer Liability
Failure to provide suitable rescue arrangements and training may result in enforcement action, prosecution and substantial fines.
VNA man-up and high-level order picker operations require effective emergency rescue arrangements. S-CAPE training can form a key part of that plan, helping employers ensure rescue procedures can be carried out safely and competently. Inadequate rescue arrangements or training can lead to enforcement action, prosecution and significant fines.
Regulation 4 of the Work at Height Regulations 2005 requires employers to ensure that work at height is properly planned, appropriately supervised and carried out safely. This includes planning for emergencies and rescue.
HSE guidance is clear that employers should not rely solely on the emergency services for rescue. For VNA and order picker operations, suitable rescue arrangements and trained personnel should be in place to respond to foreseeable emergencies.

S-CAPE training is for operators who may need to carry out an emergency evacuation while working at height.
Very Narrow Aisle operators working in 'Man-Up' trucks have no stairs or ladders. In a power failure or mechanical lock, the S-CAPE system is their only safe descent path.
Operators picking at heights up to 15 meters face suspension trauma risks if stranded. S-CAPE training ensures rapid, independent evacuation without external assistance.
Maintenance crews using MEWPs or scissor lifts in complex environments where traditional rescue is hindered by warehouse configuration or rack systems.
S-CAPE Emergency Evacuation Training is regularly booked alongside VNA, High-Level Order Picker, and EWP Training.

Designed to operate in extremely narrow warehouse aisles while maximising storage capacity. Also known as a turret truck or VNA forklift, it is commonly used in high-density storage facilities.

A specialist truck that elevates the operator to retrieve products directly from racking systems. Also known as a high-level order picker, it is commonly used in distribution centres and warehouses.

A lightweight elevated work platform that is manually positioned before use. Also known as a push-around vertical lift, it provides a simple and practical solution for working at height.

UK law does not require employers to use a specific descent device such as S-CAPE. However, the Work at Height Regulations 2005 require employers to plan for emergencies and rescue where work at height takes place. If S-CAPE forms part of your rescue arrangements, those expected to use it should be trained and competent.
